Beware - Young Person at Work!
Many employers at this time of year become involved with young people in the workplace. This involvement may be through schools and work experience placements, or directly with young people in providing temporary summer jobs or full time employment for school leavers.
Whatever the case, if an employee (permanent or temporary) is a young person specific risk assessments will be required and additional safety measures may need to be implemented.
Young people are likely to be inexperienced, unaware of health & safety risks and physically or mentally immature.
They must not be permitted to carry out work which involves a risk to health from extreme cold or heat, noise or vibration.
Induction training and on- going supervision are essential. The training should include issues such as hazards and risks in the workplace, the risk control measures implemented and first aid and fire emergency arrangements. A competent person should be allocated with the responsibility for supervising the young person at all times.
Gauntlet Health & Safety Ltd can assist employers in undertaking a Young Person risk assessment and reviewing the health & safety management arrangements in place for protecting young people in the workplace.
