Summer Time Blues

High temperatures in offices during summer days often lead to the question "What is the maximum temperature allowed?" Unfortunately, there is no maximum temperature specified in health & safety legislation, rather a requirement for the temperature inside buildings to be 'reasonable'.

What is 'reasonable' is open to debate but the approved code of practice to the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 offers some practical advice. Solutions suggested include:-

  • Providing air- cooling equipment
  • Shading windows
  • Improving ventilation and air flow by opening windows and using fans

Relaxing dress codes to allow the wearing of clothes more appropriate to the temperature, and providing cold drinks could also be an option to keep employees happy and productive.
